Update! Restoring "Old Ironsides"
On September 14th, the final and most visible stage of the 2007-2010 restoration of USS Constitution began with the cutting open of the port waist bulwarks at the spar deck level. Approximately 40' of the upper port bulwarks, flanking the main hatch, were cut away in four sections. After Constitution's October 21st underway cruise in Boston Harbor to mark her birthday, the starboard waist bulwarks will be removed.
Each 10' section of triple-thick bulwarks - white oak exterior hull planking, live oak framing, and white oak or Douglas fir interior planking - weighed approximately 2100 pounds.
After the waist bulwarks was cut away and before the oak "cap" was installed to cover the exposed live oak framing, the new hammock irons that will be installed in this open space were mocked up to make certain that the angle of the irons was set correctly. When completed, the oak cap will cover the live oak frame ends, six hammock irons will be bolted in place, and netting will be strung between the hammock irons. This open area of the ship was intended to be the "cargo bay" of Constitution. Here the guns could be lifted in and out through the main hatch, as well as the enormous casks of water, food, and the other tons of equipment that were necessary to maintain a 500-person warship such as Constitution at sea for up to 9 months at a time.
