Torpedo attack.

According to the website naval-history.net the Royal Navy cruisers HMS SOUTHAMPTON and HMS GLASGOW with 3 escorting destroyers had 2 torpedo's fired at them,this happened on 5th Sept 1939 about 20 miles off UTVAER on the Norwegian coast.This is the only site that gives this infomation,is it right or were the lookouts wrong and only thought they saw torpedo's?.

The only submarine, which could have fired the two torpedos in question, was U 20 (Möhle), which was on patrol off the southern Norwegian coast from september 1 to september 20. If it really launched the torpedos against the Humber force I don´t know.

hi,

isn´t it possible that the attacker was a "own", i.e. a RN sub ? ... "friendly fire" wasn´t that uncommon throughout the war ... afair, TRITON sank OXLEY just five days later.
