Radio Call Gkdos 18897 from Chief of Staff 15th Patrol Boat Flotilla Short AAR concerning sea and air combat during enemy landing 6 June 1944 Situation: Serviceable boats PA 2 (captured Flower class corvette), 1505, 06, 07, 08, 09, 11 from 02.30 AM at immediate readyness Le Havre. Task Radio Telegram 0332/25 attack landing craft at Oystreham and Cabourg. Weather: wind west 6-7, sea 3-4, heavy clouds, low clouds, good visibility. Boats leave 04.15, passing outer mole behind T-boats 04.43. 05.10 at buoy A2 course 217 degrees. Use small calibre guns (KKG) and hand grenades. Continuously overflown by aircraft. 05.03 opened fire. Towards the sea artificial fog banks. 05.22 inbetween these silhouettes, enemy units. 05.25 fire opened by PA 2 with 10.5cm, then recognised as larger units. Enemy opens fire with medium calibre on our formation. Our T-Boats turn on return course for harbour, I turn 180 degrees, since way is blocked by heavy units. Continous air defense. 05.38 sending radio telegram 05.26/55. 05.45 heavy explosion V 1509, high water column, probably hit by a mine. At the same time under fire by heavy ships artillery. 05.48 radio telegram 0539/58. Boat slowly sinking by the stern. 05.50 V 1511 rescues survivors. T-Boats attacking again distract fire away from V 1059/11. From 06.00 to 06.10 V 1511 under fire by bracketing salvoes. Opposing formation has come closer, heavy splinter effects. Wounded and dead on V 1511. Rescue measures broken off. One rescue float with 8 men left behind. Following return to harbour sea rescue boat sent. 06.00 order to move up the Seine. Since bar of the Seine can only be passed from 09.30, formation held before bar of the Seine. 06.15 V 1509 sunk. Bow visible for a while. Enemy air surveillance continously engaged. Enemy units fire on coast and our boats. Since bar is only passable from 09.30, decide to take on pilot, hand over severely wounded and replenish ammunition, and enter harbour for a period at 07.15. During this time receipt FT 0625/72 order to enter harbour for BSW (commander security west)-forces. Patrol boats fastened as last formation in Le Havre between 07.35 and 07.45. During entering harbour observed drops in sea area, probably mines. V 1511 enters harbour with 35 survivors and 2 dead from V 1509. 26 missing. V 1505 8 severely wounded. V 1511 4 wounded. V 1506 three times bottom scraping with propeller. V 1505 and 07 light grounding before bar of the Seine. V 1506 ready with some issues. Ammunition consumption: 10.5cm 68 rounds, 8.8 cm 55 rounds, 3.7cm 1,410 rounds, 2cm 15,900 rounds, 15mm 1,910 rounds, 13.2mm 812 rounds
