Good afternoon Gentlemen,

according the usual sources the German submarine U 557 sunk on 15 Dec. 1941 the British cruiser galatea.
As the boat was sunk by a mistake, the day after, by the Italian TB Orione which are the sources of the above mentioned statement. A wireless message by the submarine (but there was a general radio silence order, isnt'it?; a survivor repor (but all hands were lost).
If a wireless report of the action is available or if the Kriegsmarine Diary has infos about this action, when did the boat attacked and where?

  Greetings

Hallo Enrico,

Danke Schorsch,

what was the position of CP 7195?
Is the text of the U 557 message available?

Hallo Enrico,

According to Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes, "Dagabur" has attacked "Galatea" at 14.12.41 at 19.55 on position 34.01 N/ 26.02 E. "Dagabur" has reported two detonations after 1.45 minutes. May be "Galatea" was damaged in this attack.
The final attack was at 31.12. N/ 29.15 E. There is no mention of an attack report by "U 557" in this source.

Many thanks, Gentlemen.
As a matter of fact I'm puzzled. Does anyone have an idea of where it could be possible to find the original U 557 message? Many strange things happened that night.

     Good night

For example, U 557 was sunk, according the usual version, by the Italian TB Orione. But the ramming by that torpedo boat happened near Cerigotto island while Groener gives a diffferent place (in front of Salamis) and a different hour!

Hello Gentlemen,

are the orders given to U 557 for his last cruise available? When did he leaved Messina? How long had to be his patrol? When was given, first time, the piece of news the boat had been sunk by the Orione? Was there a stereotyped U Boat message caliming success quoting, for example, the number of torpedoes ecpended? Did this boat sent other messages on 14- 16 Dec. ? And, last but not least, what's FT?

A curious EC with a very strange history in his pocket waiting only for the last details

FT = Funktelegramm = wireless message.

I had the opportunity to pay a visit at the Hydrographic Intitute of the Italian Navy in Genoa.
The Galatea wreck is not in the alleged position and the original proceeding datas about Dagabur attack are totally different from the ones reported by the Uffico Storico book about the submarine war in the Med. and used by Rhower.

What I'm trying to discover are the original orders to U 557, if she really attacked or only broadcasted an other boat wireless message she had intercepted in the air according the U Boote habit to signal any info about a convoy or a squadron sailing in his patrol zone.
I'm puzzled too about the opportunity an U Boote commander could stop his planned patrol and to come back home after less than a day of duty in the planned zone without having suffered before any damage or defect (or ther's a further U 557 message stating he had some problems and had to to get Salamis?)
It's strage too the boat could have sailed home in surface even it she was so far to Alexandria. In a word I don't beleive the whole story. What the German sources say about this matter? The original documents I mean (the KTB), not the 1954 version.
Where and when exactly did the German bombers of the I./LG.1 attacked the British division that afternoon? One of them claimed an hit and perhaps they performed better than the appreciation of the time.

   Bye

Hallo Freunde,

17.12.41
08.15 Uhr Ital. Zerstörer Pigafetta und Orione, sowie Vorpostenboot 13 V 1 und Schlepper Voltaire Suda eingelaufen. Orione mit eigener Kraft eingelaufen. Bug schwer beschädigt, keine Verluste. Rammstelle 35° 31' N, 23° 19' O.
