Ηallo Rene,

hier der von Dir gesuchte Bericht

VIRTUE Greek patrols

ADM 199/1816

21.07.44
left Malta at 13.00 under Lt R.D. Cairns for patrol to the west of Melos...

...passing through Antikythira on 23rd and arriving on the 24th. Owing to a mistake in decoding a signal giving patrol positions for VAMPIRE, VIGOROUS, and VIRTUE, Cairns patrolled for 4 days some 25 miles north of the position ordered, thereby possibly missing a chance to attack a KT ship and DD which left Suda Bay for Piraeus on the 25th

26.07.44
23.50 target probably DOXA reported in Suda Bay next morning. Could not see whether escort vessel; range 3.000 yards.
[Konvoi DRESDEN and R34]
24.00 position 36º00N 24º20E fired four torpedoes and dived, range 1.700 yards; enemy course and speed 175º nine knots; own course 215º. All torpedoes missed.
The sea was rough and VIRTUE was yawing badly at the time.

Note: DOXA was erroneously reported to have arrived in Suda on the 27th, but this was later corrected and DOXA has not since been located

27.07.44
00.45 surfaced and passed enemy report for benefit of VIGOROUS

Re: British Admiralty War Diaries

Dear Thomas,

I have recently got access to a very interesting American web site which has published US Historical files including US Navy. Apparently linked to NARA (Washington). This site includes the British Admiralty War Diaries (originals are at Kew in the ADM199 series known as "War Diary Summaries", about 130 volumes). The Americans made microfilm copies of these files and they are now available for viewing on the web. The site is a bit difficult to navigate but contains a lot of information.
First week is free but after that it is 80 USD per year. I think that serious researchers at ASA should be informed.

Danke!  :MG:
