Search for Grandfather, german merchant ship visiting NZ Feb 1939

Hi, my dad was conceived in Feb 1939 to a young (18-25?) German sailor working on a German merchant ship  visiting NZ prior to the war. Would love help finding what ships visited and how I could then find crew lists. My grandmother died very young and my dad never had much more info. First name Fritz (very common i believe).

hi, Elliot,

a good question, here, but there is, unfortunately, only very scant information to evaluate and to proceed on.

You do not know the man`s Christian and family name (even "Fritz" may just be a term for a German).

From naval and merchant fleet`s history, there seems to be a certain probability that the ship belonged to the Norddeutsche Lloyd Company, but that`s all I can tell.

Thanks for reply. His Christian name was Fritz, he was on a merchant ship, and you are right that it was probably NDL. The Erlangen is one possibility but it left NZ quite late in August 39, and crew was primarily Chinese apparently. Do NDL have any archives of even ship names/routes/dates, obviously crew lists would be awesome.

I thought it would be easier to find german ship in a port in a known month, especially a place so remote and small as NZ at the time.

We are chasing local port records here too.

Das Archiv des NDL befindet sich teils im Staatsarchiv Bremen sowie im Staatsarchiv Hamburg. Die Personalunterlagen sind gesperrt und nur mit  Zustimmung der Reederei (Hapag-lloyd, Hamburg) einzusehen. So jedenfalls noch vor Jahren. Das wesentliche enthalten die nach jeder Reise angefertigten Kapitänberichte.

Gab es nicht vom Versicherer Lloyd's gedruckte Verzeichnisse über Ankunft und Abfahrt von Handelsschiffen in Häfen?
Ich wurde von Theo Dorgeist einmal darauf hingewiesen, aber es ist zu lange her, ich hab die exakten Angaben vergessen.
Vielleicht weiß hier noch Jemand darüber Bescheid ?

Jo: Und zwar ein 14tägiges dickes Heft mit den Standortmeldungen  fast ( nicht aller) Dampfer. Fährt von A nach B und hat am x Suez passiert, oder hat am y Hamburg erreicht.
War bei uns Dampfer-Fotografen sehr beliebt und auch bei dem Herren in Wedel an der Begrüßungsanlage. 
Ist wohl heute alles auf elektrisch.
