S 29 in Suomenlinna Aug/Sep.

Entrance to Suomenlinna with the wharf to the right.

Helsinki can be seen in the back ground on the boat photos. It is still warm.

Von den 112 in der Schnellbootswaffe verliehenen DKiG gingen immerhin 21 an Stabs- / Obermaschinisten

Yes, I think we have Obermaschinist Pralle on several of the photos.

It is interesting to see that he has the life west on under his jacket (photo s29007). I am nut sure if they are on S 29. It is difficult to see what is in the back ground, ice?, mist?

Hi,

Some more S 29 Finland photos.

The stadium for the 1940 Olympics is easy to find.
The back of the town hall in Kotka is more difficult.
The final Suomenlinna photo with snow must have been taken in Oct/Nov. 1941. The two closest boats are not S 29 based on the camouflage.

Hi,

S 26, S 28, S 29, S 102 and S 108 left Helsinki and went to Turku 12-14 Nov 1941.

There are a few photos from Turku with snow and ice. The Barkers cotton mill is in the back ground (it is now a park).

The boats on the photo with the bridge in the background are (from the left) S 26, S 29, S 108 (not camouflaged) and probably S 102. S 28 is probably hidden next to S 102.

S 26, S 28, S 102 und S 108 liefen am 13.11. zweimal von Turku aus, um Geleit für Kohlendampfer zu fahren, und kehrten zweimal um, zuerst wegen Schlechtwetter, dann wegen gelöschter Fahrwasserbefeuerung.
Es wäre also zumindest möglich, daß diese vier Boote im Bild sichtbar sind und S 29, das als Einzelboot Geleit für die Minenschiffe "Cobra" und "Kaiser" fahren sollte, das "versteckte" Boot ist.

Oder kannst Du das zweite Boot von links sicher als S 29 identifizieren ?

Hi Urs,

I am quite sure it is S 29 based on the camouflage. The same goes for S 26. S 29 is also in the same position with S 108 to the port side as on the other photos.  S 108 is the only white boat in Finland. I don't have any photo of the camouflage on S 102. I have one of S 28 and it looks different, but it is difficult to be sure.

Hi,

As Urs said, S 29 left Turku with Cobra and Kaiser and escorted them to Warnemünde 14-16 Nov 1941.

There are a few Treu photos showing S 29 following Kaiser and with Cobra in the lead.

Hi,

S 29 went back to Kiel after she left Finland. The boat was then painted white again.

The first photo shows S 29 with Obltn Schmidt. The "Winkerstand" is shortened so it must be Jan-March 1942.

The two other photos could be at the Wiltonwerft? There is not any ice so it could be 17-23 March 1942?

Excellent Joern, it confirms that it is S 29. Is it possible to say if it is Gusto wharf?

My last S 29 photo shows the new commander Töniges with his motto "Ran, aber vorsichtig" painted on the dash board. He had it on his later boat S 102 as well.
