Hi,

I bought 11 photos of 1 SFtl in peace time. I think the commander is Lt Mirbach on an early boat (Before typ S 18). Another photo shows that the boat is S 12.

HMA says Mirbach became Lt on 1 April 1938. He was at the time commander on an unknown boat until Nov 1938. I think that boat was S 12 based on the photos. The photos are then from summer 1938. I will show more photos from what I think is summer 1939 in a later post.

The have written "1.Schnellbootsflottille S.12" with an "s" in the middle. Is that correct?

Hi,

I think Mirbach handed in S 12 for the winter in Nov 1938. He then probably got S 18 in the spring 1939.

Photo 1: S 18 and S 13. The text is here "1.Schnellbootflottille S.18" without the extra "s". Note the light (yellow) rectangle painted on the deck.

Photo 2: The S 13 crash with Meteor on 14 June 1939. The type S 18 boat with the large round ventilators could be S 20 or S 22. It looks to me as S 13 is being towed by Meteor? Difficult to be absolutely sure. Meteor was rebuilt in 1940 (after the crash). The stack was shortened and the big ventilators were removed. Thank you for the Rostock information, it really helped.
The date must be later than 1935. The photo is taken from a typ S 18 boat (most probably S 18) based on the three poles holding the front railing. The typ S 10 and typ S 14 both had six poles.
The photos including the S 13 crash looks like they are from a serie. They are also numbered with a pen on the backside. Based on this I would guess the Rostock photo is from summer 1939.

die Aufnahme ist vom 13.11.1939 und es führt die TANGA. Lt. Lotsenkladde Warnemünde erster und einziger Anlauf der TANGA im Jahr 1939. Hier ein Foto meiner Sammlung mit Liegeplatz vor der Fischerbastion in der Innenstadt. Die Schnellboote längseits oder von den Schuppen verdeckt. Ähnliche Hafensituationen kenne ich noch aus den 1960er Jahren dort.
TSINGTAU 1935 war wohl nicht bis nach Rostock durchgelaufen und hat Liegeplatz im Warnemünder Hafenbassin gefunden. Keine weiteren Anläufe in der umfassend und gut geführten Kladde bis 1939 zu finden. Allein die Bekleidung finde ich für den 23.10.1939 etwas zu sommerlich. Aber vielleicht gab es damals auch warme Herbsttage zum Flanieren im Seebad.
Das zweite Foto mit dem MG auf der Back zeigt S 15, dort war Karl Eschenburg als Marinekriegsberichter im Herbst 1939 im Einsatz. Unter anderem sind die Boote (mindestens noch S 14) Geleit für den Kreuzer BLÜCHER in der Erprobung gefahren. Einzelne Abzüge seines Wirkens hat Karl Eschenburg unerlaubt für sein privates Kriegstagebuch in seine Heimat nach Warnemünde geschickt.

Die weißen Mützenbezüge der Marineangehörigen sprechen auch eher gegen dieses Datum.

Ein Datumsfehler ? ... oder das Auslaufen, denn das KTB der 2. (!) S-Fltl besagt :
10.11.1939   Verlegen (S 10, S 11, S 12, S 13, S 14, S 15, S 16) von Kiel nach Rostock, S 10 macht dabei Probefahrt, die anderen Boote fahren Übungsangriffe auf Begleitschiff ,,Tanga" als Ziel
13.11.1939   Verlegen (S 10, S 11, S 12, S 13, S 14, S 15, S 16) von Rostock nach Kiel

Unter anderem sind die Boote (mindestens noch S 14) Geleit für den Kreuzer BLÜCHER in der Erprobung gefahren.

Hallo Urs,
danke für die Ergänzung - habe nochmals nachgelesen. Es wird am 13.11.1939 nur eine Lotsung um 8 Uhr durch den Lotsen Wendt für die Marine genannt. Keine Klassifizierung über Ein- oder Ausgang. Also dürfte es sich um das Verlassen von Rostock zu handeln. In den Tagen zuvor keine Nennung - 10. ab Kiel, dann wäre Rostock spätestens am 12. bei all den Übungen in See erreicht. Bleibt ein Tag in Ruhe hier.
Karl Eschenburg hat danach am 07.11.1939 seine Serie geschossen.

Hi Reinhard,

Your Warnemunde Tsingtau photo can not be from 23 Oct 1935. S 13 was not ID untill 7 Dec 1935.
I think it is summer 1937 based on the Mastzeichen and the singel white S-Boot (probebly S 12).

I am trying to make a table of when the diffrent Mastzeichen were used. The Tsingtau Wappen colors were also changed each year.

The Rostock Tanga Nov 1939 photo was very intresting. I think the company sign (Hauer&Toll) might be the sours for the marking on Carl Peters chimeny in Bergen April 1940.

Hi,

I was looking through my Schnellboot pictures for more Rostock photos. I found only one in an Ebay photoalbum. The album is a 1 SFtl ~1935-38 with a focus on S 13 and Tsingtau. It is probably compiled by the seller from a mix of different photos.

It looks like the photo is taken from a Begleitschiff (Tsingtau?) of a reception orchestra (Army?). It looks cold. There is not given any date.

Is it Rostock?
