1. Researching Production Numbers and Markings:
EF Hörster: This is a well-known manufacturer of Kriegsmarine sabers. Their swords are often marked with production numbers, which can sometimes be traced back to records or collections.
Markings and Codes: The marking "O" (Ostsee) indicates the Baltic region. Collectors' guides or historical records about Kriegsmarine sabers might provide information about specific numbers and regions.
2. Finding Information About Production Numbers:
Military Antiques Forums: Websites like the Wehrmacht Awards Forum or The Collector's Guild can be useful for detailed inquiries about specific military items.
Books and Publications: Books on WWII German militaria, such as "German Swords of World War II" by Richard R. or "German Imperial Edged Weapons" by Michael J. H. are good resources. These books often include details on manufacturer markings and production numbers.
3. Tracking Down the Original Owner:
Provenance Research: This is often the most difficult aspect. Records from WWII military units or personal documentation might provide clues, but such records are rarely available.
Historical Records: Contacting military archives or historical societies in Germany or the Baltic region might yield some information. For example, the Deutsches Bundesarchiv holds records related to WWII military personnel.
Collectors' Associations: Networking with collectors and historians who specialize in WWII German military items can sometimes lead to information about specific items.
