Is there any info on a Karl-Wilhelm Dappen,
KARL, WILHELM, DAPPEN. Don't know his birthdate. Trade: Elec. Engineer
- He joined the "Kriegsmarine" around 1935 and trained for machinist and eventually rose to the rank of "Obermachinist" equivalent to probably a chief petty officer.
- He applied for a technical officers commission around beginning of 1943 and joined the Officers Training Academy at Mürwick by Flensburg (still in service today for the Bundesmarine).
- He passed out around end 1943 as a technical officer, lieutenant .(LI=Leitender E-Engineer.) for active service in U-Boots. Finishing further training first at Eckernfoerde (torpedo school), then at the U-Boot Base in Kiel, he was transferred around to the "U-Boot Ausbildungsflotille" at Wilhelmshaven (later English boarding school)"
He told my mother what had happened during the massive day air raid on Wilhelmshaven and how he miraculously managed to get out of his Boot, badly hit while waiting to pass the locks into the Jadebusen." end of quote.
I believe that this could have been U777 but data is not complete.
Dank Herb.

Ich fand dazu in der Chronik
15.– 25.10.1944
Luftkrieg WesteuropaDas RAF-Bomber-Command (Gruppen 1, 3, 4, 6 [RCAF], 8 und 100 mit 506 Flugzeugen) wirft am 15./16.10. in Nachtangriffen 2198 t Bomben auf Wilhelmshaven (dabei wird U 777 versenkt), ...
und im Internet
http://www.wilhelmshaven.de/portal/info/13-01_Luftangriff_1944.pdf
Der Unterschied von Tag- oder Nachtangriff ist nicht ganz klar. Am 15.10. war herrschte sicher um 19:00 schon Dunkelheit.

Hi Herb,
I regret to say that according to my records there is no engineer officer (active or reserve officer) with the name Dappen or similar listed among German U-boat officer personnel afloat.
Best wishes
Axel Niestlé
Hi Axel und Urs,
Many thanks for your efforts to find info on a Karl Dappen.
Cheers Herb. :MG:
Here is foto of Karl Dappen,
I hope the picture is posted.
Hi Herb
According to the Schiffsstammrolle of U-778 Karl-Wilhelm Dappen was a crewmember of this u-boat. He joined the Crew on 02.03.44, commi9ng from 2.UAA in the rank as OMasch. He left U-778 on 11.09.44 and changed to 23.U-Fl., if I understand it right. After that date I cant find any submarine service in my papers.
Hope you are well!
Roland
