22.02.1943 die USS Iowa (BB-61), das Leitschiff der letzten Klasse schneller amerikanischer Schlachtschiffe, wird in Dienst gestellt.

Am 19. April 1989 zerstörte während einer Schießübung vor Puerto Rico eine Explosion Geschützturm Nummer 2, 47 Personen starben.

Als Ursache  gibt es auch eine andere Erklärung,

In August 1991, Sandia and the GAO completed their reports, concluding that it was likely that the explosion was caused by an accidental overram of powder bags into the breech of the 16-inch gun. The U.S. Navy, however, disagreed with Sandia's opinion and concluded that the cause of the explosion could not be determined. The U.S. Navy expressed regret (but did not offer an apology) to Hartwig's family and closed its investigation.

Die US Navy  kam zu dem Schluss, dass die Ursache der Explosion nicht festgestellt werden konnte.
