At 21.46 hours on 29 Jan 1942, U-431 attacked the convoy TA-21 off Bardia and hit HMS Sotra (T/Lt Frederick Roy Linfield, RNR) with one torpedo. The vessel exploded and sank with the loss of the crew, six of them Norwegian.

Corvette GLOXINIA, French escort ship VIKINGS and British anti-submarine whaler SOTRA departed Tobruk escorting Greek empty storeships FLORA NOMIKOS (1783grt) and ELPHIS (1492grt) in convoy TA.21. SOTRA (313grt, Temporary Lt F R Linfield RNR) was sunk by U.431 off Bardia in 32-07N, 25-30E with all hands. Lt Linfield, Temporary Lt R W Henfrey RNVR, Temporary S/Lt (E) K J Johansen RNVR, Temporary Lt (E) T Olsen RNR and eighteen ratings were lost. The U-boat was couonter-attacked by the remaining escort vessels, but escaped undamage. The convoy arrived at Alexandria on the 31st.
