Joined the crew of ELSA ESSBERGER in Sep 1938. Aboard ELSA ESSBERGER in Kobe when the war began. On 3 Sep 1939 the ship was requisitioned to support the navy. Sailed aboard ELSA ESSBERGER from Kobe, Japan on 2 Dec 1940. ELSA ESSBERGER safely arrived in Lamotrek atoll, Caroline Islands, Pacific Ocean on 10 Dec 1940. ELSA ESSBERGER departed Lamotrek on 22 Dec 1940. ELSA ESSBERGER returned to Kobe on 28 Dec 1940. Sailed aboard ELSA ESSBERGER from Sasabo on 14 Oct 1941. ELSA ESSBERGER safely arrived in El Ferrol, Spain on 15 Jan 1942. ELSA ESSBERGER arrived in Bordeaux, France on 10 Mar 1942.

Volunteered for active naval service in Jan 1943.

In Apr 1944 he was transferred to France to join the crew of torpedo boat T27. On 29 Apr 1944 at 0400 hours, the torpedo boats T27 and T24 were intercepted by HMCS HAIDA and HMCS ATHABASKAN off of Île Vierge, France.  During the ensuing gunfire and torpedo exchange HMCS ATHABASKAN suffered a catastrophic magazine explosion and sank. T27 sustained disabling damage and ran aground without propulsion and on fire. The crew of T27 abandoned their ship at 0435 hours.  Kerschner was one of the 83 survivors rescued. T27 lost 11 crewmen during the exchange.

In Aug 1944 he was ordered to join the crew of torpedo boat T34 in the Baltic.

He volunteered for Kleinkampfverbände service. By 10 Sep 1944 he was training on an explosive Linsen boat for planned operations on the Eastern Front. Later served assigned to either a Biber or Marder in Denmark. 

POW/Interned by British at the end of the war.

Da scheint ein Zahlenfehler vorzuliegen : 83 + 11 = 94, die Boote des Typs T 39 hatten 200+ Mann Besatzung

Das ist eine gute Erkenntnis, danke.

Sein Nachruf und die Zusammenfassung seines Dienstes zur See erwähnten keine Besatzungszahlen für T27. (Ich habe zeitgenössische Quellen durchsucht, um das hinzuzufügen. Die zitierten Quellen verwiesen auf einige gute und angesehene Referenzen, also fühlte ich mich sicher, das aufzunehmen.)

Genauigkeit ist etwas, das mir sehr wichtig ist, also ist es vielleicht am besten, die Angaben zur Besatzung von T27 zu löschen, bis echte/akkurate Informationen verfügbar oder bekannt sind.

Danke nochmal, das ist ein guter Verbesserungspunkt und eine wertvolle Erinnerung für mich, meine Daten so weit wie möglich nur auf originale, verifizierte Quellen zu beschränken.
