Gentlemen,
I have recently been asked to research the fate of UB-74 which was sunk on 25th May 1918 by HMY Lorna at the following Position 50 32 00N, 02 33 30W.The Captain was Oberleutnant zur See Ernst Steindorff+ Of the 35 crew members? none survived, but the bodies of 4 of them were recovered. I am attempting to locate the graves of them.
I have the following requests if anybody can help
Is it possible to get a crew list? Do any previous logs exist? Does a photograph exist?
The reason for my research is a request from a descendent of a crew member and to place a memorial to the crew on the wreck, to honour the crew who are on "Eternal Patrol"
If you can help please reply or contact me for further information
Thank you
Martin

Vielen Dank.MartinSie dürfen diesen Dateianhang nicht ansehen.

Herb,
A huge thank you for that, I tend to believe this number of the crew as 32 over 35.
All I need now is a photo!

Thank you again

Good morning,
there is a short reference about the fate on UB74 in Thomas Termote's book "War Beneath the Waves -
U-Boat Flotilla Flandern". I have a German edition of the book and can certainly send a scan of the relevant page, in case you don't have it (text only, there is no photo of that boat).

The book has a brief description of how the boat was sunk west of Portand. Apparently, four crew members managed to exit the boat and were recovered by the British. Three were dead, one was alive but died shortly afterwards. No reference of the names of the crew, nor their graves. I wonder whether these four have eventually been buried at sea?

Interesing side note: Divers from a British Navy Intelligence squad (the famous Dusty Miller) examined the wreck shortly after the boat sank, as they did with other U-boat wreck back in those days.

Thank you,
Axel
