Register/Archiv für Kapitäne der Handelsmarine?

[t-geronimo]

I am trying to find information on my great-grandfather Emil Christian Wilhelm Gerlach who was a German merchant navy captain in the late 1890s to early 1900s. I have just found that he had a German mariner's license issued in 1895. Is it possible to locate a record of this (and do you know where such a license would have been issued)?
Any advice on who to contact or where to look would be most welcome.

Personallisten.
