German Imperial Navy postcard collection

Is that a very popular street name in Germany or is this just coincidence? Or, is it as simple as: Jahnstraße is usually the name of the street the local turnverein is on?

The name is quite popular, just as you said, before the war the name was often found at or near the local gym. "Turnvater Jahn" (Gymnastics father Jahn) was the founder of the movement that gave the industry workers / labourers a chance to exercise, as the living conditions were very very bad. This was meant to be a means to reconstitute the health of the workers. Nearly at the same time Mr. Schreber invented the so-called Schrebergärten (gardens), little pieces of land where working class people could build a little hut and grow vegetables. Of course, as always in Germany, these gymns and gardens were closely regulated and the governments of various polical backgrounds applied a lot of rules. And the clubs added some more rules - pure and simple bureaucracy at it's best

Hello my friends across the pond! Here are another two sets (below).

I love the looks of these old masted sailing ships like the S.M.S. Rower in the first set. They might be too early to interest many of you, but I have been very interested to see the technological transition from the mid 1800's through to the end of WWI.

By the way, what is a Korvette? I've seen that a few times already. And I've seen Linienschiffe translated as both "Ship of the Line" and also "battleship." Is this roughly the same thing?

The card are often referring to things that must have been written in a letter, so it is not always clear what he is referring to. Also it is interesting to see that many cards have been written with a very clear handwriting, some have been scribbled in a hurry. There are many repetitions and sometimes the old German writing is hard to translate. I tried to find the right words, but can't get all the puns and plays on words into English. Anyway, these cards are a great source on the feelings of "ordinary" people in WW I, quite different from the official publications.

"Ship of the line" in this case seems to be the literal translation for "Linienschiff".
This word was used by the germans for the biggest warships in World War 1.
The term "Battleship" in Germany was introduced later, after WW1.

t-geronimo is right, I picked the term from a dictionary dating back to 1912, (from  my grandfather) I use it when I try to find adequate words for old German words...

In the Kiel, 10.07.15 card, he says, "Have you read the German answer – note to America?" I wonder what he's referring to there... I believe that Germany was trying to cut off supply between Europe and the United States around that time with the u-boats (e.g. the sinking of the Lusitania) -- could it be related to that?

One card per day, and one letter per week. Well, that explains all the cards! I'll have to see of any of those letters were kept, too. I believe the other side of this conversation (the cards sent from Lotte to Ernst) were sold in the 1970's to postcard collectors because they had nice floral subjects. I was disappointed to hear that...

the German gouvernment did propose, by note of 8th of July, 1915 (as an answer to the second US protest note concerning the "Lusitania" incidence, of 15th of May, 1915), that all US citizen passages between US and Europe (in- or outbound) should be done only by pre-announced vessels, and also to mark these vessels in a special manner (e.g. painting, full position lights etc) to be not confounded with troop transports, or transports of war material.

Great info, Harold! Thank you very much! Do you happen to know if any of your forum members live in or visit Kaldenkirchen? I hope to get a couple current photographs of where Ernst and his family lived while they were there, plus find an address for a home I have a picture of (which would probably require a local!)

After that I went to an automat to restore myself a little.
