Hi Urs,

once again  I am amazed by your thorough knowledge.
In this way Ernst's cards and comments become "living history". Personally I like his - sometimes naive - comments on the war i.e. in Serbia or Russia best, like "God is definitely on our side" etc.
In today's world of almost total information one can hardly imagine that there was no "free" press for your information. You had to believe the statements of the imperial General Staff...

I agree completely -- this is *great stuff*. My family and I are reading these with great interest, and I'm sure many other people are, too.

It's difficult to understand many of Opa's comments out of context, and even with all the supporting information here, there is still a lot of context missing -- e.g. Axel's comments about no free press, which wasn't obvious to me, yet I think is very important to consider as well. This is also clear in their later letters during the rise of the Nazi party. We have the benefit of knowing now what would eventually become their future, and it can take some effort sometimes to read them in the context of their time.

I like those sometimes naive comments too -- I think they help make him seem more "real" somehow, and show a bit of his character. He died when I was very young, so I never really got to know him before now...

I'm out this weekend, but I'll try to get some more up next week. Again, I really appreciate all the interest and information!

Urs -- I am finally getting to these changes. I went back to Arkona, Kondor, and Komet, and they are spelled with a "k" on the faces of the postcards. Maybe I don't understand -- was "k" used for "c"?

Also for these other two, "Rower" and "von Mücke" were printed on the fronts of the cards.

If the print on the fronts of the cards have typos, then I think I'll leave them misspelled as the "title" of the card (because that's how it's printed), but add a comment about the misspelling.

I think I've made all the others. Thanks so much for your careful eye!

I agree that that´s the best way to do it.

I re-checked Arcona, Condor, Comet and Rover and this is definitely the correct spelling, i.e. the front of the cards is erroneous or, as you said, a typo.

In the case of Kapitänleutnant von Mücke, the error is, partially, mine: The "von" is correct, but he name is spelled "Mücke", not "Murke"

I've been really busy trying to get things finished up in time for Christmas this year -- scanning hundreds and hundreds of old letters between Ernst and Lotte, too. There are still a bunch more postcards yet to come, and then I'll start on that old navy photo album of his. Frankly, I'm not quite sure yet how I'm going to scan the album -- it's big, old, and permanently bound, and almost certainly will not fit on my scanner!

SET 37

#1 There is no record of "Straßburg" and "Stralsund" sinking a British submarine in a surface action. - The British submarine "D5" was, however lost on November 3, 1914 on mines laid by "Stralsund" previously during the naval bombardement of Yarmouth by German battle cruisers.

#2 The small cruiser "Augsburg" shelled the Russian naval port of Libau (or Liebau) on August, 2, 1914 (less than 24 hours after the German declaration of war upon Russia), some of the first shots of the First World War at sea. The reported Russian cruiser is unknown.
"Ru????che" should read "russische"

#3 "Goeben" and "Breslau" shelled the Algerian ports of Bone and Philippeville on August 4, 1914 (less than 24 hours after the German declaration of war upon France) to impede the embarkation of French colonial troops which were meant to go to the front in France. Both ships did not, of course, close the ports that far, there´s an artist´s imagination at play.
"Breslan" should read "Breslau"

#4 The "Königin Luise", a former ferry between Germany and great Britain, had been converted to an auxiliary minelayer at very short notice and had laid mines off the Thames estuary on August, 5, 1914 (less than 24 hours after the British declaration of war upon Germany). The minelaying had been observed by a fishing boat. British warships, among them the modern scout cruiser "Amphion", chased and sank the "Königin Luise"in the late afternoon of August, 5. Early on the next morning, the "Amphion" was lost on the laid mines, too, a number of rescued German seamen going down with the british ship. The simultaneous sinking of both ships is shown, again, due to the artist´s imagination.

#5 The small cruiser "Königsberg" sank the obsolete British cruiser "Pegasus" in the harbour of Zanzibar on September 20, 1914, within one hour. The fighting distance was, however, more than 10,000 yards and not as close as shown (again, artist´s impression) (further info see Set 25, #6)

# 6 The naval action shown in this picture did not take place and is, once more, an artist´s imagination. After shelling the Algerian ports (see #3) "Goeben" and "Breslau" put into port at Messina (Italy being neutral) to resupply coal. On the way to Messina the ships met two British battlecruisers, but there was no action as war had not been declared, yet. The British ships were unable to match the German ships´speed and could not follow their track. On August, 5, after the declaration of war between Great Britain and Germany, British ships were stationed north of Messina (to prevent further attacks on French troop convoys) and at the mouth of the Adria (to prevent the german ships to go to Austro-Hungarian ports). The southern entrance of Messina strait was guarded, however, by the light cruiser "Gloucester", only. When the German ships left Messina in the afternoon of August, 6, "Gloucester had to remain outside the range of "Goeben"s far superior guns. The remainder of the story, "Goeben" and "Breslau" proceeding to Constantinople, has been told, already.

Great stuff, Urs!  I'll owe you beers when I visit there again.   (Where is Rostock anyway? )

The artistic license part is interesting. I suppose if it's a photo there's not a lot open to interpretation because there's not a lot you can do to change the image (at least not back then that I know of), but with art it's an entirely different story -- subject to artistic license, and filtered through national pride or maybe even political motive.

I just started scanning some more in which there are several painted scenes -- older, masted ships. I suppose at some point one might not even know if the subject being painted is real at all, or entirely in the mind of the artist!

In this war it has happened quite a few times that a father had to salute his own son. something similar is pictured overleaf. (the caption is in a North German dialect, the father says "Let's hope I get that military salute correct). I have four more sets coming very soon (probably today) and then the last four sets shortly thereafter. These later sets have images that are less to do with the navy actually, but they're still the same time frame so I thought I would include them with the collection.

Re von Tirpitz, I see on wikipedia.org that he was a big proponent of unrestricted u-boat warfare: "When restrictions on the submarine war were not lifted, he fell out with the Emperor and was compelled to resign on March 15, 1916. He was replaced as Secretary of State of the Imperial Naval Office by Eduard von Capelle."
