https://www.kystverket.no/nyheter/kystverket-tildeler-kontrakt-til-reach-subsea-for-ny-undersokelse-av-u-864/

The Norwegian Coastal Administration "censored" their preliminary report to the norwegian government in regards to a final solution for U-864 last fall (final report is scheduled for later this year, after the last survey this summer where they recovered about 500 kg mercury, which is leaking in huge amounts from the wreck).
They did that by omitting part of the Norwegian Armed Forces Material-agency's report with description and risk-asessment of the ammunition load in the wreck. They didn't include the ammunition description, and as I was the one creating that particular document, I was kind of pissed off. Thus, I made a more detailed description of the torpedoes (the dominant part of the explosives), to avoid the information being "buried".

I recently translated the description to be shared with a NATO-agency, but perhaps it might be of interest for others as well. The document is called "2026-04-12 Description of torpedoes in the wreck of U-864 (Håvard Hovdet).pdf", and located here, with some other documents related to U-864:

Those interested in the most current images and photogrammetries of the U-864 wreck, can read the report from last years survey by Reach Subsea:

You're welcome.

I think the NCA's scandalous handling of U-864 for more than 25 years should be known. So far, they spent about EUR 4500000 on surveys and reports, achieving nothing but dragging the case out in hope that their preferred solution (covering the site) will be the result.
They have not been able to establish correct facts about the wreck at all, presenting reports with ridiculus undocumented "risk-assesments" etc. When our report with documented facts from original german WW2 archives (supported by Axel Niestlé's research and a report he made for us), the NCA dismissed it as "assumptions"(!). They put more trust in the "open sources" they have used since 2003 (ie Google and Wikipedia I assume...), than our work. For instance, in their report they wrote "...although we recognice that Axel Niestlé has done a lot of research into the topic, we also know that german U-boat captains didn't always follow orders...".
In 2014 they cut an opening in the aftsection of the wreck to look inside. They have this insanse obsession, despite being handed information, to verify by themselves the presence of torpedoes in the wreck. Result: Air evacuating for over 7 hours, and now the aft torpedoroom has been flooded with seawater for 12 years, with the obvious negative effect on ammunition (faster corrosion) and human remains. This year they wanted to do the same with the forward torpedoroom + removing the "Monsunlast behalters" (logistic-containers), since they are convinced they contain torpedoes, not the massive amounts of documents which is part of the cargo (we know that at least one of those containers are intact, as tiny airbubbles are escaping). Due to their absurd fear of non-existing torpedoes, the plan was to place the containers on the sebead and cut them open (obviously destroying the unique and valuable historical content). Luckily, the parliament instructed the government to make the NCA cancel those plans, but the NCA is still doing all they can to get their final solution.

Hi Harvard,

IMO you should avoid the term contained in the last to words (I won't repeat it) as it is "historically fixed" on the German plan of extinction of the Jews, i.e. the Holocaust or the Shoah.

greetings, Urs

Sorry, but although I understand what you're referring to, I find it quite absurd to make such association from this context..?
In regards to U-864, the core of the problem is literally to decide the final solution (from several possible options) for how the wreck and the polluted wrecksite should be handled in an eternal perspective.
The phrase ("endelig løsning" in norwegian) is very common and used in almost all documents and reporting, and I can frankly not come up with any other proper alternative.
Obviously, my point of view is different to germans (especially older generations?), but I think it's strange and unnecessary to connect the current serious environmental threat to a very different (and awful) part of WW2 history. Obviously not something I would even consider, but I'll make a note of your comment.

Hallo Urs,

Ich habe lange danach suchen müssen, was Harvard denn nun 'falsch' gemacht haben soll, weil es ja wohl "two" statt "to" heißen sollte.

Axel
