Es war das erste Boot, das nach Beginn der Operation Paukenschlag am 13.01.1942 an der Amerikanischen Küste versenkt wurde. Das Boot blieb während des Gefechtes an der Oberfläche.
Nachdem U 85 nun schwer getroffen wurde, wurde der Befehl zum Verlassen des Bootes gegeben. Als sich nun etwa die Hälfte der U-Boot-Männer im Wasser befand, begann das Boot schnell zu sinken. Daraufhin warf die USS ROPER elf Wasserbomben zwischen das immer noch im sinken befindlichen Boot und die im Wasser treibenden Überlebenden. Alle Mann starben bei den Explosionen der Wasserbomben. Nach dem Krieg wurde U 85 entdeckt und ist nun ein beliebtes Tauchziel. Tote 45. Am folgenden Morgen wurden 29 tote deutsche U-Boot-Soldaten aus der See geborgen, die in ihren Schwimmwesten auf der Wasseroberfläche schwammen. Sie wurden einzeln nach ihrer Bergung auf dem Zerstörer fotografiert und im Laufe des 14.04.42 zu einer Marine-Luftwaffenstation gebracht, zwecks geheimdienstlicher Untersuchung. Am folgenden Tag, dem 15.04.42, überführte man die Toten auf den Nationalfriedhof Hampton, Virginia, wo sie am gleichen Tag nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit im Beisein eines protestantischen und eines römisch-katholischen Geistlichen beigesetzt wurden. Eine Abordnung von 25 amerikanischen Marinesoldaten feuerten drei Salutschüsse über die offenen Gräber. Die Grabsteine der Deutschen weisen aus Gründen der >>Geheimhaltung<< lediglich Vor- und Familiennamen der Toten auf, keine Lebensdaten, keine Dienstgrade und keine Nationalitätsangaben. Der Grund der Geheimhaltung über 20 Jahre, die auf dieses Seegefecht zwischen den Zerstörer ROPER und U 85 folgten, dürfte auf der Hand liegen. Denn das, was hier in der Nacht vom 13. auf den 14.04.42 geschah, war Mord an wehrlosen Schiffbrüchigen. Es war ein Bruch aller Regeln der Seekriegsführung, ein Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit. Quote: Among the new arrivals on the US East Coast was Eberhard Greger with U 85, who completed his fourth patrol. On the night of 10 April, while heading south off New Jeresy, he sank the Swedish freighter Christina Knudsen with two torpedoes with 4,900 GRT. Three days later, on the evening of April 13, he lay in wait in the shallow water off Bodie Island, north of Cape Hatteras, on the dark night of the new moon.
On the same day, the smooth-deck destroyer Roper made an ASW patrol from Norfolk to Cape Hatteras. The Roper under Hamilton W. Howe was armed with 5 3-inch cannons, 6 torpedo tubes and 75 130-kilo depth charges, which were rolled down from the tail scaffolds or dropped from depth charge launchers. In addition, the ship had only recently been equipped with a Type 286 radar built in Great Britain.
On April 18, shortly after midnight, the destroyer, while heading south off Bodie Island, got an object 2.5 kilometers away on the radar screen. Since these waters were teeming with small navy and coast guard cutters, fishing trawlers, tugboats and salvage vessels, the contact did not cause much excitement at first. Routinely, the Roper turned to approach the position. At the turn, the listening device picked up the sound of rapidly turning screws. This message alerted the ship, because the object was moving too fast for the usual patrol or fishing boats.
The vehicle was U 85. If it sighted a destroyer at a water depth of only 30 meters, a submarine had two options. It could dive and in all likelihood be torn to pieces by depth charges, or it could drain with full force on the surface into deeper water. Greger, perhaps hoping to shake off the destroyer in the darkness, had chosen the second option. He did not know, however, that the destroyer had a radar device. Dönitz and his U-boat men still believed, despite numerous indications to the contrary, that radars were too large, too bulky and too sensitive to be installed on small ships.
The destroyer pursued the boat at 20 knots and gradually overtook it. In a last desperate attempt to get rid of the pursuer, Greger fired a stern torpedo 650 meters away. The torpedo failed and ran just past the port side of the Roper. When the Roper was within 270 meters and apparently wanted to ram, Greger gave the order to sink and leave the boat. In order to be able to carry out this last act in dire need and get away from the Roper, he suddenly turned hard to starboard.
When U 85 tacked, the Roper switched on the 24-inch searchlight and opened fire from a very short distance. The Germans ran on deck to jump overboard, but the Americans, as they later said themselves, in their hunting fever, thought that the Germans wanted to occupy their deck gun and shoot the thing out. They covered the deck of the boat with machine gun fire and mowed down two Germans who wanted to jump overboard.
The valves of U 85 were open, and it quickly filled up and began to sink stern first to the 30 meter deep bottom. As they later said, there were about 40 Germans in the water and on the deck of the sinking boat, many of whom shouted 'please save us' in German. The Roper thus had the opportunity to capture U-boatmen for intelligence and propaganda purposes, and in the shallow water there was a good chance that Navy divers from U 85 would be able to recover a four-cylinder Enigma machine, the new short signal book and other secret material. But the Americans probably didn't think of anything like that in their excitement. The Roper tacked, ploughed between the men floating in the water and threw eleven depth charges set at 15 meters directly over U 85. The Germans, who were not torn to pieces by the propellers of the Roper, died from the depth charges. Not one man of the crew survived. The violence of the explosions shook the boat outside and inside and rolled it almost exactly to the starboard side, where it lay in the sand.
Because it was feared on the destroyer that other U-boats might be in the vicinity - and perhaps the fate of the sister ship Jacob Jones was still fresh in her memory - Roper gave a report of her attack and steamed away. After daybreak, a Blimp, a Catalina, and five other planes appeared. The Catalina sighted the bodies of the Germans and wreckage and dropped its own depth charge. Another aircraft led the Ropers back to the scene with the help of smoke bombs. The ship also threw another depth charge and then launched two boats to collect the bodies and debris. In the middle of this gruesome operation, the Roper located a U-boat with the sonar - perhaps the wreck of U 85 - broke off the rescue work and senselessly threw another four depth charges.
The boats of the Roper found 31 bodies. Two of them were horribly mutilated. They were only searched and then simply left in the water. The other 29 bodies were brought on board, stacked on deck and covered with a tarpaulin. The Roper threw two more depth charges at U 85 and then sailed triumphantly to Norfolk. In front of the port, the Scioto, a Navy tugboat, took over 29 corpses. After they had been searched again (and two useful diaries had been found), they were photographed and their fingerprints taken. Then they were buried in designated graves with all military honors at the National Cenetry in Hampton, Virginia. The coffins had been provided by the Veteran ́s Administration.
The Navy immediately made efforts to recover U 85 and/or to rescue the secret material lying in the boat. Numerous small vessels, including 2 of the 22 ASW trawlers that had arrived, the Bedfordshire and the Saint Loman, cruised over U 85. At the beginning of this operation, helmet divers found a live, unexploded depth charge on the bottom next to U 85. A special unit of the Navy blew up the bomb and undoubtedly damaged the boat even more. Between April 15 and May 4, divers make about a hundred dives to the wreck. Since the boat lay flat on the starboard side, no diver could get inside and search for the Enigma machine and other secret material. Due to the damage to the air pipes and tanks caused by the depth charges, it was not possible to lift the boat with compressed air or at least to right it.
Finally it was concluded that U 85 could only be lifted by ""excessive"" use of pontoons, and the salvage work was stopped. The divers dismantled a lot of equipment on the upper deck of U 85 - the 20 mm machine gun on the bridge, the U-boat optics, the daughter compass, and they dismantled the 8.8 cm cannon, in whose barrel the muzzle plug was still inserted. On the other hand, they did not succeed in prying open the upper deck container and recovering the reserve torpedo. The divers reported no signs of gun reefs from the Roper and came to the conclusion that U 85 had 'probably sunk itself'. Unquote.

mögen die getöteten Besatzungsmitglieder von U 85 weiterhin in Frieden ruhen

und die Verantwortlichen für das Massaker öffentlich verurteilt werden. Zumindest diese Geste stände der US-Navy gut zu Gesicht.

Da empfehle ich das Buch Illegale Kriege von Daniele Ganser.

Nebeneffekt dieses Buches bei mir ist, ich lese und höre Nachrichten jetzt wesentlich kritscher.

Moin,
kritisch die Umwelt beobachten sollte ein jeder, der sich eine objektive Meinung bilden will. Vermeintliche Freunde sind ganz schnell knallharte Geschäftsleute und nehmen es dann mit der Moral nicht so wichtig.Da brauche ich nur mal kurz über den Großen Teich blicken.
