HMS Upholder (Lt.Cdr. M.D. Wanklyn, VC, DSO, RN) torpedoed and sank the Italian transport Tembien (5584 GRT, built 1914) about 25 nautical miles west of Tripoli, Libya in position 32°55'N, 12°42'E. She carried 468 POW's and was escorted by the Italian destroyer Strale. The destroyer hunted the submarine dropping nine depth charges before starting to rescue the survivors. She was later joined in her efforts by the auxiliary Laurana and the torpedo boats Clio and Generale Antonio Cantore. In all 390 POW's, 68 Italians and 10 Germans drowned.

Fu possibile salvare soltanto 157 uomini, che furono sbarcati a Tripoli: si trattava di 69 italiani (tra cui il comandante Cappiello ed il commissario di bordo), 10 tedeschi e solo 79 prigionieri.

Gerettet wurden 157 Mann: 69 Italiener, 10 Deutsche und 79 Gefangene. Die Ähnlichkeit der Anzahl von Deutschen und Italienern unter Geretteten bzw. Ertrunkenen macht mich allerdings stutzig.

Hi all,

Tembien carried 498 PoW, 137 Italians and 20 Germans. Strale picked up 155 survivors (68 Italians, 9 Germans and 78 PoWs). The torpedo boat Clio found two survivors (1 Italian and 1 PoW), making a total of 157. Sorry for the mix-up.
