Heute Morgen in unserer Tageszeitung:

Die "SS Norway" oder "Blue Lady" wird trotz Asbest in Alang abgewrackt.
Leider hab ich im Net noch nichts dazu gefunden.

Asbest-Schiff wird verschrottet

NEU DELHI (DPA). Trotz Protesten von Umweltschützern darf der asbestbelastete Ozeandampfer "SS Norway" in Indien verschrottet werden. Das habe das indische Verfassungsgericht nach dem Bericht einer Expertenkommission entschieden, die das Schiff untersucht hatte, berichteten indische Nachrichtensender gestern. Das alte Kreuzfahrtschiff soll im weltgrößten Schiffsfriedhof Alang abgewrackt werden.

So, am 14.08. ist die Blue Lady (ex-Norway) in Alang auf Grund gesetzt worden:

August 14: From our contact: "I saw the lady and waited for her beaching today in Alang. At last minute it was postponed to tomorrow morning (August 15) and she will be at Alang beach at 7:30 AM.

"From a distance she is quite a sight: graceful and marvelous are the words that come to me. Sadly, also tied up with two monstrous tugs for her last voyage, though."

NEW DELHI: The 'Blue Lady' will be in court again on Thursday. Two days after the controversial cruise liner beached off the Alang ship breaking yard, the challenge to its entry will come up for mention in the Supreme Court.

Gopal Krishna, India Coordinator of the NGOs' Global Platform on Ship breaking, said the issue will come up before the court's mentioning board.

Environmentalists claim the ship carries more than 1,200 tonnes of asbestos waste and unquantified amounts of cancer-causing polychlorinated biphenyls and heavy metals.

They say they are not aware of any Supreme Court order permitting the beaching, and that no legal arguments on the matter have been heard.

In turn, the official position within the environment ministry is that a technical committee allowed this after a review of all the data and inspections by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board as well as the Central Board.

It was believed the ship dismantling can be handled with the existing facilities at Alang. The additional solicitor-general has been requested to inform the court.

Environmentalists don't quite see it that way. In a statement on Wednesday, they alleged the technical committee on ship breaking, Gujarat Maritime Board and Gujarat Pollution Control Board used a 'holiday window' to bring in the ship.

The ship was only allowed to anchor in Indian waters on humanitarian grounds by the court, they claim.

On Monday, M G K Menon, former chairman of the High-Powered Committee on Management of Hazardous Wastes appointed at the instance of the Supreme Court, wrote to Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal voicing his own apprehensions.

NGOs claim the levels of asbestos in Blue Lady, or S S Norway, are more than double those in the French aircraft carrier Le Clemenceau, which was not allowed to dismantle in Alang.

aber jeder Scheiß wird erhalten, Schiffe die dazu da waren dem Menschen zu helfen sich gegenseitig zu vernichten. Potthässliche Flugzeugträger von denen Menschen behaupten sie wären "schön". Schiffe die eigentlich nicht mehr sind als nur noch ein paar morsche Planken und ein paar rostige Nägel. Viel Geld wird ausgegeben um Insignien vebrecherischer Regime zu bergen und stolz auszustellen, aber diese wundervolle Schönheit, die letzte und einzige Nachfahre der großartigen Normandie wird einfach... verschrottet!

Nach Long Beach hätte sie gehört und auch wenn sie jetzt vielen Menschen zu Arbeit verhilft, aber das hat sie nicht verdient!

Ich war die ganze Zeit schon auf der Suche nach einem solchen Foto und eigentlich fast froh, noch keines gefunden zu haben... 

Aber in Schwarz/weiß sah sie noch besser aus als in Blau/Weiß

NEW DELHI: In a clear message to all involved in bringing the world's largest ocean liner S S Norway — re-christened Blue Lady — to the coast off Alang, Supreme Court on Thursday said the ship cannot be broken down without its prior consent.

"The process of breaking the ship will not start without express permission from the court," said a Bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and S H Kapadia.

The observation came after counsel Sanjay Parekh mentioned an application for urgent hearing alleging that the ship, carrying thousands tonnes of hazardous waste, has been illegally beached off the Alang coast, one of the largest ship-breaking yards in Asia.

Parekh feared that breaking of the ship would start soon as that is the process which follows beaching. He sought a direction against the beaching of the ship saying it was in the teeth of the court's May 12 order permitting the ship only to enter India's territorial waters.

However, the Bench refused to pass any order on the application saying if there is any violation of its orders, it will pass suitable directions later.

The application, filed by an environmentalist Gopal Krishna, had sought on order similar to that passed by the apex court restraining the decommissioned French warship 'Le Clemenceau' from entering India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). French President Jacques Chirac had then ordered the return of the warship.
