Ernst wasn´t able to know, but "Nürnberg" was not "privateering" (i.e. hunting allied merchant ships) in the Pacific, but had joined the German "East-Asian Cruiser Squadron" (Admiral von Spee, commanding). On November, 1, the cruiser squadron had defeated a - by numbers and strength inferior - British cruiser squadron in a naval action off the town of Coronel on the Chilean coast. During this action, the British armoured cruiser "Good Hope" and "Monmouth" were sunk with all hands, the latter being sunk by "Nürnberg" late in the fight; combined loss of life was 1,570 men.
The "Nürnberg´s" crew was not to enjoy this success for a long time, however, as their ship was sunk by the British armoured cruiser "Kent" in the battle of the Falklands on December 8, 1914, with 327 dead and only 7 survivors. Most of the German squadron´s ships, the armoured cruisers "Scharnhorst" and "Gneisenau" and the light cruiser "Leipzig",  met the same fate, total loss of life exceeding 2,200 men, among them Admiral von Spee and both his sons.
The last moments of the "Nürnberg´s" fight were celebrated in Germany - not quite correctly - by picture and poem as a "heroic last stand".

Just a suggestion: Maybe you should sort the cards by date once they are all translated. This would print a very lively and interesting view of the developements of the time and relate them to the progression of the war.

there´s one problem I perceive that´s, really, an import from Germany (Sorry  : ):
English does not use the German "Umlaute", i.e. the "double vowels" like ä, ö, and ü and the "German sharp s" = ß

To be "correct" with your browser you will have to decide, in my opinion, to write, e.g. "Großer Kurfürst" (correct German spelling) or "Grosser Kurfuerst" (approx. correct pronunciation).

There´s, by the way, a nice sailor´s story referring to that problem.
In 1965, Germany ordered three guided missile-armed destroyers from the US which were built by Bath Iron works, Maine.
The names (in sequence) were to be "Lütjens" (an admiral), "Mölders" (a fighter pilot) and "Rommel" (no explanation necessary).
The first crew arriving in Maine found their ship named "Lutjens" and had the nameplate corrected.
The second crew arrived at a ship named "Molders" and had the nameplate corrected.
The third crew arrived at a ship named "Römmel" ...

Hi, Alex,

looking back on my recent posts, I find that I have to correct myself, at least partially.

"Großer Kurfürst" or "Karl der Große" is a more recent way to write.

The ships´nameplates did, as far as I know, not contain the letter "ß", but showed "GROSSER KURFÜRST" or "KARL DER GROSSE", i.e. only capital Letters where a "ß" may be mistaken for a "B" and was, therefore, not used.

I do not know  - question to the Forum  - how the name was used in official writing/documents, where the name was not written in capital letters, but in a normal way. It may even have been changed during the older ships` lifetime, e.g. "Karl der Große"`s between 1900 and 1916

The correct name is indeed Ossowiecz, but I try to transcribe the cards in the way Ernst wrote them, not always easy when using Microsoft Word and its dictionary and grammar of contemporary German.
Due to a conference on short notice, the next sets will be posted in transcription and translation on wednesday

Hey, I *really* appreciate all this information -- the work that Axel is doing, and a lot of the historical context you're providing. This project is going far better than I ever anticipated, and a good part of that is due to the interest that you all have taken in it. I am very grateful, and I (again) thank you all very much!

I've started adding the umlauts for the more recent cards (now that I've learned how to type them on my American keyboard!) and once they're all completed, I'll try to go through them all again for a sort-of copy-editing pass. I should be able to pick up the ones I missed at that point. Same thing for the s-set, but as you already noted, it's not used that often in these cards.

I really do appreciate the work of my friend Urs, as he is a very knowledgeable historian. As my specialty is more or less the Pacific War I would have never found all these historical backgrounds, especially as the professional historian next to my office is TDYed for some time, so I am really glad that Urs doublechecks my transcriptions and translations!

FYI, he had 12 brothers and sisters; two of them died early on. The names of all the siblings were Heinrich (1882), Ludwig Ferdinand Ernst (1889 -- this is the Ernst in the cards), Annchen (1890), Johanna (1891), Else (1893), Friedrich (1894, died at age 4), Amalie (1897), Ferdinand (1898), Ludwig (1901), Paul (1903), Adolf (1905), Herman (1907, died as infant), and Marta (1909).

Also, (I think this came up in an earlier card) his father owned an upholstery fabric mill.
