2. 3. I have not managed to find this harbour. It is S 60 (based on the eating board and the nr.3 photo). I think it is in 1943. Anyone? Note the sun helmets.

I have not been able match it to Empedocle (can still very well be). It do look like Sicily. I think there is a castel (ruine?) in the upper right corner. I have spent houers trying to find it!


Now some S 60 uniforms. The portraits are probebly all from the first owner of the photos.

Copy of british battle dress jacket. No eagel (=work clothing?). White collar piping and a fancy scarf.

Second man from the left has Kriegsmarine tropical jacket and Luftwaffe tropical trousers. He has also an Afrika corps cuff titel. Note the white specialst badges on the mann to the right.

Just too try it, Google suggest Quai Laubeuf at le Suquet, Cannes.

HMA has only one typ S 30 boat in Cannes (S 58, 27 Dec 1943). The weather looks too good for late Dec. I think it is S 60 going to (or from) Toulon in ~May -July 1943.

Hi,

I will now start with the early photos from the Ebay seller. First are some photos of new soldiers at some baracks. There is not any text on the photos. It looks like the trees has started to lose leaves. Could it be ~October (or spring in ~May?)?

1. The Ex-Halle. I was lucky and found another photo from a diffrent Ebay seller (crainsmilitaria) that was said to be from Eckernförde and 5 Schiffstammabteilung. Note the strange leather tops (buttoned on?) on the jacket shoulders. I have never seen them before. Are they rain caps or does it have anything to do with shooting?

2. 3. Eckenförde, 5 S.St.A. Part of the Kaserne is still standing and is used as an art center. Now named Carlhöhe.

5. Other Kaserne are now gone. I found a photo from Beata (bettika) on the forum (see link) that showed the same houses. It looks like the photos could have been on the same roll of film (greenery, bricks etc). I think it is raining on Beate's photo and it looks like it is drying up on the other. Hallo zusammen,


ich hoffe mir ist keiner böse dass ich meine Anfrage auch hier rein stelle, aber ich denke hier sind die ganzen Schnellboot Fachleute versammelt, und hier sieht man ja allerhand tolle Fotos!

Hat jemand in seiner Sammlung Vorkriegs Fotos, oder auf dem Rechner als Datei, vom Eichenlaubträger Korvettenkapitän Götz Freiherr von Mirbach?

Aufnahmen während des Krieges gibt es ja zu Hauf, besonders ab seiner Ritterkreuzverleihung, aber kennt jemand Bilder von vor dem Kriegsausbruch?

Am Ankauf von Stücken zu seiner Person wäre ich ebenfalls interessiert aber das ist gerade zweitrangig, ich versuche ihn auf frühen Fotos zu finden.

Über Kontaktaufnahme würde ich mich freuen.

I will continue with the photos from Ebay.
New Kasernen for the oath giving (Vereidigung) to A.H. There is not any text on the photos but a postcard gave a hint.

It is stamped Wesermünde and 10 S.St.A. It is written by Walter (S 60 man) to Freulein Helene Hopp. He calls her Lene. The card is written 1 Sep 1940. Is there more information written in the text (I have  problem to read it)? Tanga will come back in later posts.

I found the "Fahneneid" in 14 S.St.A photo album, 1939/40. I understand that the Fahneneid is still done today (not to A.H of course)  in much the same way based on photos.

Back to the Ebay photos. Manfed had more training after the Voreidigung in another Kaserne. A postcard gave a clue. No text on most photos but there are two numbering systems. One is probebly the roll numbers making it possible to get the photos in the right order.

The postcard did not give any location but it is the present Marineoperationsschule (MOS) in Bremerhafen. What was the name in 1940?

1935 bis 1945 hieß sie Marineschule Wesermünde.
Ab 1956 hieß sie Marineortungsschule.
Zum 30. September 1997 wurde die Marineortungsschule außer Dienst gestellt und zum 1. Oktober 1997 in neuer Organisation die Marineoperationsschule aufgestellt.

Our man Walter joined the 6 Sftl. after the DB course in Untertürkheim (ended 12 April) and continued the training on a typ S 10 boat. He proably became part of Noltes crew on S 12 in Danzig 26 April 1941.

I think it is S 12 in Kiel with Linienschiffe Schlesien SN and Schleswig-holstein SX in the background (correct?). It should be 17 May 1941 (HMA). Walter could be second from left.

I think it is S 12 in KW kanal (or Kiel?) on the way to Wilhelmshaven 18 May (correct?). Walter is to the left. There is a scond boat next to S 12.
