Without doubt, the best and most delightful memory of your time in the Imperial Navy is a series of postcards of all the German warships.
A complete series of every ship, 134 cards, costs 5,00 Marks.  – A series of all commissioned ships, 75 cards, costs 3,00 Marks.
But such a disbursement is a very expensive treat for a soldier, but there are ways to obtain this great souvenir without spending a Pfennig. Have your duty station buy you such a series as a  Christmas gift. Your duty station will not mind and it will be a great pleasure for you.
   Complete series are on stock and readily available
      in Kiel at Lempe-Brothers, Flämische Str. 10
      in Wilhelmshaven at Anton Austermann, Bismarckstr. 56
in Sonderburg at Chr. Quist, Große Rathausstr.
But under any circumstance, please demand that the series are bought at the stores mentioned above, and that the cards are carry the publisher's note "Photogr. u. Verlag Gebr. Lampe, Kiel"  (Photographies and Publishers, Lampe-Brothers, Kiel), because otherwise we can not guarantee that the pictures are genuine and that the composition of the series are correct.

My bones are sore from gymnastics on Tuesday, that happens when you do not exercise for a long time, but it still was fun. – The ships are called the Machandel – Flotilla. (The ship shown is an old coastal armoured cruiser. Originally known as "Meerschweinchen" = guinea pig, due to their ungainly appearance, theexpression "Machandel" literally means juniper, but is also used for juniper-liquor, the Austrian / German variety of gin, so these guys on those ships seem to have been drinking gin a lot).

It's cool that the gym is still around.

After WWI, Ernst made periscopes at Nedinsco in the Netherlands before coming to the USA in 1930 and making periscopes for the US Navy at Kollmorgen in New York. Both of those companies are still around, too. Interestingly, I happen to know an executive at the company that now owns Kollmorgen, and through that connection I got in touch with some of their old-timers, who worked with him there. They wrote down a few great memories of him for me!

Alas, no such luck with Nedinsco, though. They never returned my email.

Jetzt sollen wir alle gegen Cholera geimpft werden. Dies kann mir nun gar nicht gefallen; die Impfung wird nämlich drei mal vorgenommen, jeden 4. Tag 1 mal und zwar jedesmal durch eine Spritze ca. 1 Kubikzentimeter Impfstoff unter die Brustwarze gespritzt. Man wird ca. 2 Tage krank dadurch. I am sending you a picture of light cruiser “Karlsruhe”, she is endangering the commercial shipping of our enemies at the east coast of South America.

Card 5: Here, Ernst committed two small errors. The ship`s name should be spelled "Cöln" (with a "C") and she was not of the same class as "Emden".

Card 7: Ironically, "Karlsruhe" sank just the same day, November 4th, by a still unexplained internal explosion, and stopped "endangering the commercial shipping of our enemies".
