Im Westen ist wieder eine große Schlacht zwischen Engländern und Deutschen entbrannt. Die Engländer wollen wieder mal mit aller Gewalt durch. Der Angriff der Italiener am Isonzo ist wieder mal blutig abgeschlagen. Ich denke, dass die Russen wohl zu keiner ernsthaften Offensive mehr fähig sind, trotzdem es seine westlichen Verbündeten so sehr wollen. - Sei vielmals herzlich gegrüßt von D(einem) tr(euen) Ernst.

#6 – The "peace offer" : Due to pressure from the Austro-Hungarian government (Emperor Karl had succeeded Emperor Franz-Joseph who had reigned since 1848 for 68 years), which foresaw a near collapse of its empire due to military losses, the German government issued a "peace offer" to the Allied Powers on December 12, 1916.
The text spoke, however, only of the Central Powers` "invincible military power proven in combat" and made no offers altogether, especially not referring to the occupied areas of Belgium and France, but placing the responsibility of all future losses on those who refused to make peace.
The main political purpose was, probably, to appear, internationally, "peace-seeking" to the still neutral remaining United States and, internally, to the German population where questions were asked who was responsible for the continuation of the war.
The Allies` rejection on December 30, 1916, was used as a basis for a proclamation of Emperor Wilhelm II. issued on January 5, 1917, in which he placed all responsibility for the war " ... in the face of the Lord ..." on the Allies and asked for courage to achieved a final victory. (this is the same text as in comment to Set 27 #8)

#2 – The picture shows the last moments of either cruiser "Leipzig" or cruiser "Nürnberg" in the battle at the Falklands on December 8, 1914. For both ships it was allegedly reported that a man or a group of men stood on the sinking wreck holding the flag of the Imperial navy into the air. The "many men lost" Ernst mentioned were from  the armoured cruisers "Scharnhorst"(860 dead) and "Gneisenau" (592 dead) and the small cruisers "Nürnberg" (327 dead) and "Leipzig" (315 dead). See Set 22 #6, as well


SET 47

#3 The "another battle in the West" refers to the very successful British attack on the German-held ridge at  Messines on June 7, 1917. Its main feature was the under-mining of the German trenches with 500 tons of high explosives. The detonation could be heard in Great Britain, more than 200 kilometres away.
"The Italian attack at the Isonzo" refers to the tenth (May 12 to June 5, 1917) of eleven bloody border battles in which the Italian army made very little progress against the Austro-Hungarian troops, but lost many men.

Wow! This is very cool! (and not just because I quite literally owe my life to this romance!) I have often wondered how/when cultures with formal/informal pronouns move from formal to informal in a relationship like this. (I read somewhere that it happened over a couple of beers, but I don't know how accurate that is ) It is just great to see a little bit of how this relationship formed!

On Nov 23. 1913, when the postcards to her start, he would have been 24 years old and she would have been 20.

That lynx/mirage line is just hilarious!

Ferdinand, by the way was probably his younger brother. He was 18 at the time. Amalie was 17.

This his mother's father, Ludwig Wimmer (maybe Wymer), who lived to 84.

Sadly, his own father passed away the very next month. He was only 58.

Seeing all the postcards in order (in your document) makes me realize how awfully sadly they end...

Mehr Karten gab es leider nicht.
Per email erfuhr ich  dass Lotte und Ernst Anfang der 20er Jahre auswanderten und dank guter Ausbildung in den USA schnell Fuss fasten.

Hello, friends! Here is a bit of a follow-up: Ernst and Lotte got married in 1922 and had a girl and a boy (my father). They lived in Kaldenkirchen, and Ernst worked in Venlo. In 1930, Ernst came to the United States on NGL's SS Bremen, leaving the family back in Germany. For the next five years, Ernst and Lotte wrote lengthy letters to each other nearly every week. I have the first year of those communications translated into English, and I published them for my father before he passed away: https://amzn.com/148015184X -- you can also "look inside" to read some of it. (If anyone is interested in these, please let me know -- I think I can create a coupon code that will reduce the cost.)

During this time, Ernst eventually ended up working for a company called Kollmorgen in New York City, where he helped to build periscopes for the US Navy. There were a lot of things (and a number of struggles) during this time that they wrote about, and I find these letters very interesting as a result. I especially like their observations about various aspects of life in big-city USA and small-town Germany. Eventually Mr. Kollmorgen helped to bring the rest of the family over from Germany in 1935.
