Hi All,

The encounter was indeed with a British submarine.

I have just added to following to the page of HMS Proteus on uboat.net.
https://uboat.net/allies/warships/ship/3403.html

At 1345B/28, HMS Proteus (Lt.Cdr. P.S. Francis, RN) departed Alexandria for her 9th war patrol (8th in the Mediterranean). She was ordered to patrol in the western Aegean.

Between 1540B/28 and 1726B/28, A/S exercises were carried out with HMS Jackal (Lt.Cdr. R.McC.P. Jonas, DSC, RN) and HMS Decoy (Lt.Cdr. J.M. Alliston, RN).

At 2120B/28, in position 31°53'N. 29°04'E, sighted a dark object ahead on bearing 330 at a range of 3 to 4 miles. Suspected it to be a submarine, end on.

At 2125B/28, the object was identified as indeed being a submarine, end on. Range was now 5000 yards.

At 2126B/28, the other submarine dived. In view of the uncertain identity passed an enemy report and proceeded. [HMS Porpoise (Lt.Cdr. E.F. Pizey, DSO, RN) and RHS Triton (Lt.Cdr. E. Kontoyannis, HN) were known to be in the area.].

The submarine encountered was the German U-205 which reported seeing a submarine in Grid CP 7162 [centred in 31°45'N, 29°06'E].

On seeing a submarine at a range of 3000 meters at 2133B/28, u-205 turned to a parallel course. She then dived to make an attack from pericope depth but the other submarine, thought to be British, could not be seen through the periscope. U-205 then surfaced to follow the enemy submarine but contact was lost. U-205 tried until 0114B/29 to make contact with the enemy submarine but was unsuccessful.
