Hello Jan-Olof,

maybe this was M-35, which attacked ARCADIA with escorts on 17.04. at 0035?

M-35 attacked a day earlier (01.30 17.4.43 moscow time). She can't fire any torpedoes.
This was only sub on romanian coast. 3 more subs was on position another places:
M-112 near care Sarych,
S-33 near cape Tarchankut,
SC-209 between Tarchankut and Odessa.
This 3 subs didn't attack anything on 18.4.43.
So, U.9 mistakes.

Btw, M-35 ("malyutka") has only 2 Torpedoes!

Jan-Olof

Hello Igor,

many thanks for clearing this up.

Best regards,

Jan-Olof

Here's some info from KTB U 510 (Ritschel Band 10, page 80)

11.07.42  AF 4950  1015  U-Bootsturm in Sicht

On 25.7.42 she [SC-402] really attacked unknow sub in pos. 70.11,1 N - 31.40,2 E. I can't say which sub it was.

In naval grid "AC" I only found U-209. She didn't observe attack of an enemy submarine.
U403 and U592 operated too much westwards (naval grid "AB").

20.09.42/0815  U403 (Clausen)  in AB 6976 sighted S-1

At distance of 10.000 meters Soviet sub S-1 was sighted, course 215° speed 8 knots cruising parallel. Not sure of identity, U403 prepared an attack. U403 asked "What ship?", Russians signalled "C 1" repeatedly. The Soviet submarine then turned towards U403, so U403 fastened speed to 15 knots and left Soviet boat behind while making signal "Idiot" (means "fool"). Soviet sub answered with final signal "C 1".

I can hardly believe the story (especially about signal "idiot"), but would like to know, what is told in logbook S-1 about this incident?

U636 claimed to be attacked by a (possibly Soviet) submarine  with gunfire at 04.58 Uhr in AB6391 (between Spitzbergen and Northern Norway) on the route of Arctic convoys.

Are there any news about encounter of a Soviet or British sub with German Uboat on that day?
Was any Soviet submarine operating so far west ?

ein Gedanke: es wäre möglich, daß hier ein Lesefehler im Zusammenhang mit kyrillischen Schriftzeichen vorliegt; "C 1" (kyrillisch) wäre dann "S 1" zu lesen.

Hello. This is completely strange account. By this time S-1 (C-1) was more than one year sunk (destroyed in Libau by crew 23.6.41).
Only sub on North with resembling name was K-1. She was in sea 20.9.42 and positioned north from Hammerfest. But she not sighted any other sub and didn't exchange ES with them.  I think this account is some sort of fish story.

S-15 and M-107 was in sea. First near Tanafjord, second in area Vardo - Kongsfjord.
And soviet subs didn't operate far from land.

07.08.1941/0205  U81   feuert in Quadrat AC82..   2x 2-T auf sowj. M-171.
M-171 2.8-10.9.41 was on base, attacked was M-175. She actually received one "treffer", but tropedo didn't explode.

11.08.1941/1800  U451 begegnet in Quadrat AC89.. sowj. D-3. Kein Angriff.
D-3 that day was home, in guba Olenja. Encountered sub in reality was SC-404.

03.09.1941/1400  U451 wird von sowj. U-Boot in AC85.. angegriffen. 2-T ausgewichen.
This day was 2 attacks from SC-422, both with 1 torpedo against transports. No reports about enemy sub, nor attacks on it.

09.09.1941/0447  U451 begegnet in Quadrat AC58.. sowj. U-Boot. Kein Angriff.
This must be SC-404.

11.09.1941/0255  U451 begegnet in Quadrat AC85.. sowj. U-Boot. Kein Angriff.
This was probably M-171, which try unsuccesfully to attack unidentified ship.

18.09.1941/1600  U451 wird von feindl. U-Boot in AB97.. angegriffen. 3-T ausgewichen.
Not soviet sub, if attack really happen.

11.12.1941/1152  U454 (Hackländer) begegnet in Qu. AC84.. feindl. U-Boot. Kein Angriff.
M-173 was near Kirkenes and K-22 between Kvaloy and Rolvsoysunn. No enemy subs sightings.

@ Urs:
