I think you are right it must be S-117. This entry in her Lebenslauf indicates that a Kalotte had been installed not too long ago :

16.06.1943 - 18.06.1943   Boot aKB beim Marineunterstützungs- und Reparaturbetrieb (Maureb) Cherbourg, Nachbesserungen an der Kalotte


Apparently it had also been considered to fit a Kalotte to S-78, the boat that had collided with S-117. It was decided not to do so :

12.04.1943   Entscheidung: kein Kalotteneinbau, weil Boot nicht mehr als Front-, sondern als Ausbildungsboot vorgesehen ist

Ja, im März-Mai :
08.03.1943 - 11.05.1943   Instandsetzung, beginnend mit Ausbau des Ruders und der Bb- und Mittelwelle
04.04.1943   Instandsetzung bzw. Neueinbau der Spanten abgeschlossen, Beginn Neubeplankung
07.05.1943   Parallel durchgeführte kleine Motorenüberholung beendet
11.05.1943   Instandsetzung Bootskörper abgeschlossen, es folgen Restarbeiten sowie Einbau von Kompaß und Torpedozielsäule

On the subject of S-117. The initial "D" in this photo looks different from the "D" in another photo. Question is which is which, S-117 or S-87, Dietrich Bludau or Dietrich Howaldt ? Scroll down:

vom Lebenslauf her wäre S 87 auszuschließen, weil das Boot vor Einbau der Kalotte nicht in der Ostsee war.
Das "D"-Boot hat einen hohen Winkerstand an Bb-Seite. Ist das ein schlüssiges Indiz für ein Schlichting-Boot -> S 117 ?

The info on this page regarding the initial D is a bit confusing. The initial D is associated with 3 boats : S-63, S-87 and S-117

There are some new photos in this serie. I think they are from when Pribe was on Torpedoboot G7 / T 107. Can anyone confirm?

The officer is described as "Charly an board". He is on some of the later S 46 photos as well. I think it must be Karl-Heinz Merkel, (commander on S 44).

Today I managed to locate a photo from the Schnellboot in Action book (it's also in Steve Wiper's book). According to the caption it shows S-25 and S-26 moored in a German port in May 1940. At first I thought it was actually IJmuiden but later I discovered the pic was taken at the Berghaven in Hoek van Holland. I also wonder if these two boats are indeed S-25 and S-26 because they are never mentioned together in the Lebenslauf of these boats. I posted the pics here :

Hi Arjan,

I think it is S 26 and S 25 baser ön the "box type" ventilators that were uniqe to these  boats. The photo is probebly from around 6-8 June 1940. S 26 stiĺl has two Winkerstanden.

Gentlemen two questions regarding technical details. What is the function of the hand wheels on the rear engine room air intake seen in some pics ?





In some pics there is something resembling a fire extinguisher inside the life rings mounted on the sides of the chart house. Perhaps a smoke buoy (Nebelboje) attached to the life ring ?

Auf Deck wurden in den Standkäfigen die deutschen und fanzösischen Nebebojen, mit griffen Links und rechts um sie über Bord zu geben. Wenn Du die Fotos einstellen kannst, können wir Dir das sagen. Ein Feuerlöscher auf Deck wäre ungewöhnlich zumal die deutsche Botte ja auf Diesel liefen und deshalb das Rauchen an Deck erlaubt war. Wenn ich Brandgefahr eindämmen wollte dann sicherlich im Maschinenraum oder in Abhängigkeit von den Fähigkeiten des Kochs in der Kombüse. Aber nicht auf Deck.

Dir anderen Bilder sind sehr interessant, leider kann ich hier nicht helfen, müsste aner etwas sein, was aus dem Bootsinneren kommt, was auf Deck geregelt wird. Da bin ich gespannt auf Urs und Alo
