I don't know anything about Dutch navy ships but you are no doubt right about the Jacob van Heemskerck. It's tempting to assume that the aerial photo was made in 1939 because that was the date that this ship was in the dry dock to be modified into a floating gun battery. Nevertheless, there seem to be some detail differences between the aerial photo and the two 1940 ones which make me feel the aerial pic was taken much earlier than 1939. Also there are quite a lot of sailing vessels in the aerial photo, more probably than could be expected for 1939. The ship's history in Dutch :

Hr. Ms. pantserschip Jacob van Heemskerck werd speciaal gebouwd voor de dienst in Nederlands West-Indië en is daadwerkelijk nooit in Nederlands Oost-Indië geweest. Tot 1939 werd het pantserschip vooral ingezet als stationsschip in Paramaribo en om de vlag te vertonen in de Caraïben. Het pantserschip werd echter ook ingezet voor oefeningen en vlagvertoon op de Atlantische Oceaan, de Oostzee en de Middellandse Zee. Op 19 april 1939 werd het verouderde pantserschip ontdaan van haar machines en ingezet als drijvend geschutsplatform in IJmuiden als Hr. Ms. Batterijschip IJmuiden. De bemanning bracht het schip op 14 mei 1940 tot zinken om te voorkomen dat het in Duitse handen zou vallen. Het wrak werd op last van de bezetter op 16 juli van datzelfde jaar gelicht en acht dagen later naar Amsterdam gesleept waar het werd hersteld.

In maart 1941 werd de ex-Jacob van Heemskerck naar Kiel gesleept en op de werf Howaldtswerke omgebouwd tot drijvende luchtdoelbatterij of Flakschiff. Er werden acht kanonnen van 10,5cm en vier van 3,7cm aan boord geplaatst alsmede zestien 20mm mitrailleurs. Verder kreeg het schip de beschikking over twee optische afstandmeters en een Würzberg radar. Omdat het schip niet meer over machines beschikte werd er een generator aan boord geplaats die voor de benodigde elektriciteit kon zorgen. In september 1943 werd het ex-pantserschip in Duitse dienst gesteld als Undine. Het schip werd naar Peenemünde gesleept om het daar aanwezige onderzoekcentrum voor V-wapens te beschermen tegen luchtaanvallen.

Na de oorlog werd de ex-Jacob van Heemskerck teruggevonden in Wilhelmshaven en overgedragen aan Nederland. Op de Rijkswerf in Amsterdam werd het casco vervolgens verbouwd tot logementsschip. Er werd een groot dekhuis op het schip gebouwd dat in de toekomst 800 marinemensen in opleiding zou moeten kunnen onderbrengen. In de lege machinekamers en ketelruimtes werden generatoren en installaties voor luchtverversing geplaatst en er werden vele hutten bijgebouwd in de ruimtes waar voorheen munitie en voorraden opgeslagen werden. Op 23 februari 1948 kwam het schip in dienst als Hr. Ms. Neptunus en zou tot 1974 voor het KIM afgemeerd blijven liggen ter huisvesting van adelborsten en stafleden van het KIM. Met de ingebruikneming van het legeringsgebouw Neptunus achter het KIM in 1974 werd het logementsschip, dat inmiddels in een zeer slechte staat verkeerde, overbodig en op 13 september van dat jaar werd Hr. Ms. Neptunus definitief buiten dienst gesteld. Op 11 mei 1975 werd het afgedankte schip voor sloop verkocht.

Hello Guys, I will built "Shark camo" Schnellboot. Not many photos of this, only two or three. I have a question, was the entire hull of this schnellboot just black (deck and bridge dunkelgrau) or was the hull a combination of black and dunkelgrau? And the second thing, from the photo it is clear that it already had a refitted bow cannon, but the stern one was still an old 20 mm or could it have been a more powerful Bofors or something else? Thnx.

Hi Kreon,

It looks like the hull was black and the deck and bridge grey (or brown). It was armed with a stern 2 cm gun.

In the photo it looks like the hull was really black (but the question is whether it was the entire length or just the part from the bow to the bridge), and that the sides of the bridge were also black (you can also see it in the same photo), the rest was probably gray, because I don't see any reason why they would use brown.

I loked some more on the 8 SFtl photos in the thread.

The photo showing the fish boat (photo: 8 SFtl) from a distance might show that it is only the head of the fish and the cut out in the hull for the torpedos that are black. The rest of the hull looks grey. I think the "grey" hull is actually a camouflage in the same way as S 46 (also 8 SFtl). There are several photos of the S 46 camouflage on pages ~120..123. It also looks like the the aft deck house (or gun cover?) is left white.

I looked back a few pages and I have to say that it's getting harder and harder.....and OMG.....for example - your color photo of S-46 with signalization flags....there is probably really combination green, gray and matt white/schnellbootweiss too    . Almost impossible to make it right.... Idea of black prow (with shark) and rest boat with gray was more easier. 

I'm starting to get the impression that it would be better to choose another "Norwegian" schnellboot, wwhere there are no such doubts

A possible alternative might be a Danish ex-german Schnellboot, there are a lot of pictures

There are a lot of Schnellboote photos on Ebay de at the moment. I will post some here.

S 48 in front of the new bunker in Rotterdam. Note all white paint (including the ), dodgers (new for 1941) and no front gun.
