Where is this? Looks like Copenhagen? Norway? The boat behind the men is a typ S 18 with mast. Both boats have dodgers. I think it is Walter with the dachshund dog.

Hi,

I found it. It is Copenhagen, Asiatisk plads with the Knippelsbro (bridge) and Christians kirke (church) in the background.

It could be (HMA) 27-29 Aug 1941 when S 18, S 36 and S 56 were repaired (in Copenhagen?).

The dog (with Walter?) is a dachshund. It is probebly the Bordehund on S 18 or S 36. Nolte on S 56 will have a diffrent dog.

Hi Jürgen,

Great photo. The blured movment and the mystery man on the left makes it interesting.
It is easy to match it with Google earth. Rådhuspladsen. All buildings are still there.

A post card Walter wrote the day he and S 56 came to Helsingör (14 June 1941). The stamped Feldtpostnummer 12460 = Fürerschiff "Tanga" / 6. Schnellboots-Flottille

Die beiden Boote sind "Kutter". Vielleicht wurde ein "Spaß"-Rennen veranstaltet ... wie das "Kutter-Race" bei der Kieler Woche

They are there, but you can't see very much of them.

Yes, a race makes sense. They are as far away from Tanga as possible inside the harbour. They are at the entrence to a dry dock. The dock is now a part of a marin museum.

Ein kleine Korrigirung.
Es ist nicht das Rathausturm. Es ist die Palace Hotel. Das Rathaus ist an die andere seite des Strasse.

Das Ebay photo is auch nicht die Rathausturm. Es ist die Christians Kirche.

Hi,

There are not any more typ S 30 (S 56) photos with Walter until S 60, 1943 in the Med.

I think he was sent back to school after S 56 went to KMW Wilhelmshaven on 15 Sep 1941.

It looks like they are at a Volkschule (~12 years old) based on the "monkey ladder". The photos were sold as "Marineschule Kiel" with just numbers on the back.

Hi,

I knew there was a big gasometer in Kiel Wik and that there is also a nice water tower that might fit the second photo.

It turned out that the tower was a part of the Gaswerk in Wik (not the water tower).

Gaswerk (pre war) from Holtenau. The lock is to the left outside the photo.

It was possible to find the gasometer and the tower on a map from 1942.

The tower is no. 25 Apparatenhaus and the gasometer is no. 46 Gasbehälter 50000 m3

The tower was destroyed in the war (gasometer as well?)

It was very difficult to find the buildings in the background on the first photo.

The roof and the gabels have been rebuilt (bomb damage?). The smaller building behind the big building proves it is the right spot. The Volkschule is gone and there is a transformer station instead.

The original gables are still in place on the rest of the building.

The Volksschule can now be reconstructed (green rectangel) on Google maps.

It is still possible to see traces of the gasometer foundation on Google maps. The Gaswerk tower is compleatly replaced with other buildings.


Do anyone have more information regarding the school? A map or an address?

It is S 30 and I think S 19 on the way to Kiel from Helsingör on 21 Sep. 1941.They are in Copenhagen at the very begining of Langelinen. The photo is not taken at the same place or time as the previous Copenhagen photo.
